The old way of creating art Isn’t working.
It’s rule bound.
It’s formulaic.
It’s predictable.
It says, if you just have more techniques, you’ll be great.
It’s riddled with self-doubt, inner criticism, second-guessing, perfectionism, and the tyranny of technique.
You struggle with: starting, coming up with ideas, repeating yourself, copying others, getting stuck in the middle, feeling frozen, fearing ugly art, worrying about finishing, and more.
Contrary to what most people say, talent is NOT limited to a few.
There’s NO LIMIT to what you can achieve based on your inherent abilities, and it DOESN’T have to take you years to create your soul work.
The 3 Massive Mistakes Artists Make
That Cause Them To Not Like Their Art
MISTAKE
#1
Painting Paralysis
You’re so afraid of making mistakes, so you never Start. The fear of doing something wrong overtakes the desire to create.
It takes everything you’ve got to start one painting. Then you get hung up on one painting, making it precious. You may work on one painting for months and then you’re devastated when you don’t love it. Pretty soon you’re avoiding your art altogether because it’s so frustrating.
The Pros Paint A LOT. The Museum of Modern Art in New York estimates that Picasso created over 20,000 works of art.
THE SOLUTION IS TO START
There’s a concept from mathematics called zero to one. This is the idea that the interval from zero to one is larger than any other interval. It’s larger than one to two, two to three, three to four, and so on. It’s going from nothing represented by zero to something represented by one.
Imagine that you’ve been avoiding your studio. It’s been a few days. The last time you were in there, you felt disappointed by your painting. Not wanting to repeat that experience, you find other activities to distract you. And the longer you wait, the harder it is to show up.
This is where zero to one comes in. If you can say to yourself, let’s just go in there and mix some paint, zero to one. Maybe I’ll explore mixing orange and green to get variations on citrine, zero to one.
If you can say that to yourself and remind yourself that it’s about starting, starting something, anything- this will help you get back in there, into your art. This is not about creating a masterpiece. This is about starting and you can start anywhere.

Elisabeth went from being anxious about starting a painting on a blank canvas to selling a painting on the first day of an exhibition of over 100 artists.

At the end of last year, I was accepted into a jury-judged exhibition with over 100 artists, which was an incredible encouragement. The first day of the vernissage I sold a painting “Zornpalette” which came during my trip in the the program.
If I go back a few years, I got anxious when I would start painting on a white canvas.
I have also been a “perfectionist” which has not facilitated my creation. Since I found Nancy among all the thousands of other art teachers, my life has changed, not only on the artistic level but on so many levels.
The feeling when I first loved what I painted was incredibly strong and because it was genuine and rooted within myself. Sure, there is still often a struggle during each painting, but then I hear Nancy’s voice that it is precisely in the “ugly paintings” something new is emerging. HOW EXCITING IS THIS?
~ Elisabeth Malmgren

MISTAKE
#2
The Tyranny of Technique
You look outside yourself for answers, for step-by-step techniques for your paintings, emulating others, and looking for validation of your art through critique and praise.
You may believe you’ll become a great artist once you learn all the current techniques or buy all the right tools and supplies.
You take so many technique classes and your paintings look like everyone else’s: repetitive and formulaic. The reason? Technique is painting from the outside in, rather than the inside out.
It’s vital to understand that the answer is not in technique– it is ultimately about understanding foundational concepts that can take your art deeper, allowing you to express your own true art.
THE SOLUTION IS TO EXPERIMENT
The mark of being an artist is being one who experiments continuously. Not resting on your laurels, not satisfied with the status quo. It’s about stepping into the unknown.
I love this quote by Michael Cutlip an artist in Berkeley, California. He said,” when I go into my studio, if I already know what’s going to happen, it’s all over.” He also said “a painting must be free to wander”
Hung Liu said, “my best paintings are always tomorrow’s paintings, not today’s.”
A powerful way to access experimentation is to ask yourself the question: What if?
Allow your mind to both wonder and wander, allow it to ask: What if I try this? What if I try that?
Whatever it is. It could be exploring a rectilinear Cartesian grid understructure. It could be bulbous shapes. It could be a one color palette. It could be anything that evokes excitement or meaning or aliveness for you.

Why is Experimentation Important?
“Becoming a great artist is about the movement of coming closer and closer to who you are. It’s about reaching the fullest expression of who you are in your art.”
The answer is not technique. No amount of technique will get you there.
Technique is only there to facilitate expression, but it is not expression itself.
You cannot lead with technique. What takes you there is the willingness to experiment, which is based on trusting yourself.

Ngo Thuy went from worrying about painting to experimenting freely in creative ways with self confidence

The program provided me with understanding and insights into abstract paintings. It did help me to be able to experiment freely in creative ways, with no worry about how improvisational paintings are. I can adjust and refine my intuitive painting with self-confidence.
It is obvious that joining the course made me feel like being an artist and my dream of becoming an artist comes true.
~ Ngo Thuy

MISTAKE
#3
This is when the artist repeats not others, but herself.
This is the situation when the artist has moved past paralysis and past looking outside of herself and emulating others’ work. Just when she thinks she’s got that solved and she’s on her way with deep experimentation- She repeats herself in her art and in the process loses sight of possibility.
The danger of winning, of creating successful astonishing art, is the danger of repeating oneself.
The artist is still falling back on repeating, still falling back on what the artist thinks is the solution, the formula of what works and paradoxically, the artist is no longer living at that edge, of stepping into the unknown, no longer creating astonishing art anymore.
The artist takes her success and drives it into the ground through repetition. She takes it down to death. The artist becomes so focused on success that she loses curiosity, discovery and expressiveness in the flash.
THE SOLUTION IS TO EVOLVE
your art through The Adjacent Possible® Framework
The essence of being an artist is continually evolving your art. One form unfolds into the next. It’s like being in a river, it’s ever changing, and never ends.
What we’re talking about is the Big Momma of all practices.
The groundbreaking concept from theoretical evolutionary biology formulated and articulated by my partner, Dr. Bruce Sawhill as well as Dr. Stuart Kauffman at the Santa Fe Institute in the early nineties, The Adjacent Possible.
And I’m going to apply The Adjacent Possible concept to creativity itself.
The Adjacent Possible is the idea that each step you take illuminates a number of possible paths forward that were not only invisible before, but did not exist before. Your action changes the environment you’re in.
It’s co-evolution. It’s co-creation.
It’s akin to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle in theoretical physics, where the act of observing changes what’s being observed while in The Adjacent Possible your act of creating affects existence itself.
So every move you make on your canvas is opening up the next possibility
You simply don’t know what’s going to happen next. And that makes for astonishing, unpredictable, unique art. Art from you- Your gestures, your experiences, your impulses.
It’s a mind blowing, Big Momma concept.

So why is evolving your art “The Adjacent Possible® Framework” important?
Being an artist is about continually evolving your art, allowing it to unfold and not be reduced to prescription or formula.
It’s about reaching for your fullest self expression and getting to the elusive deepest work we crave to do.
It is about continually stepping into the unknown, into The Adjacent Possible and cultivating surprise.
This is where the most astonishing art comes from. It is the essence of creativity. Indeed, it is the science of creativity.

Jo went from painting as a hobby and not being sure about her style to becoming a full time artist with a unique style

I am excited to be sharing another journey with you Nancy. Under your guidance, tutoring and workshops I have developed my style as an artist and as a result of this I have now taken the plunge to be a full time artist. You have given me the confidence to be disciplined, and believe in myself.
It is so exciting to be in my studio each day, putting into practice the knowledge I have gained through your tutoring , and the feeling of joy I experience when I see paintings completed that I am proud of.
Thank you Nancy wholeheartedly , it is awesome to be sharing another journey with you.
~ Jo Rankin

THE DANGER OF NOT OVERCOMING THESE MISTAKES:
The danger of not evolving your art and employing The Adjacent Possible™ Framework is that you spend years trying to figure out why your art does not excite you.
Meanwhile, your art stagnates, you feel bored. You have a lack of enthusiasm for your art. You lose confidence.
You repeat what’s worked before.
As you fall back into safe art, your art becomes predictable, formulaic, and you’re simply not reaching your dreams of that elusive deepest art you crave.
The danger of not experimenting is that you spend tens of thousands of dollars looking for the answers in tools and techniques, trying to learn how to make art you’ll love.
And lastly, perhaps worst of all, the danger is that you reach a point of such deep frustration that you throw your hands up in resignation giving up on creating the art of your dreams.
And Not Starting at all.

Lois went from doubting and fearing her work as an abstract Artist to never doubting her creativity & expression

I had the greatest artistic experience with the program. Nancy shows great care and compassion in her work and instructions.
The most profound thing for me is that she helped release any doubt or fear about working as an abstract artist and to never doubt my own creativity and expression. Thank you Nancy!
~ Lois Stone

Helen went from fearing a blank canvas to believing in herself and creating many starts

I am absolutely enthralled by your course. It really has brought a lot of joy to my life, and put a spring in my step. I think it’s your philosophy about believing in yourself.
I understand what you mean by many starts, mine end up being a blank canvas. Now I practice mark making before I start, getting into that stream of consciousness. This happened in my last painting.
~ Helen Tainsh

What Is The Elegant Solution?
It has to do with one overarching concept. The Inner Journey.

The big idea is that the inner journey affects everything:
Your mindset, your psychology, your belief and trust in yourself, or lack thereof affects your art, your creativity, your life.
It has far-reaching implications and potential consequences. It’s so important in your art that I call it the Holy Grail. And that’s because it affects the three vital studio practices that I believe are at the core of creating as an artist.
So it’s all connected: We begin with the Inner Journey and then we have 3 foundational practices: Start, Experiment and Evolve.
This is the ISEE Creativity Methodology.
This one simple concept can help you express your deepest art that you’ve been working on for years in just a few months..

Eva went from not trusting her creativity to applying her own abstract art style to unique projects

Nancy’s strong belief in self trust has started to rub off on me. This has changed my work immeasurably. I feel I’m on an exciting path toward understanding more fully why the creative process is so essential in my life .
~ Eva Darrington

Renata went from freezing up in the middle of her paintings to taking risks and experimenting with joy

What makes Nancy’s courses so valuable is her background in existential psychiatry as well as her understanding of the creative process. She’s able to coax out of you, gently and non-judgmentally, your true authentic self. And she makes you believe and trust in yourself along the way.
Having come from a background in graphic design before taking up painting, I was very familiar with the principles of design that make for a good painting, but there often came a point in the process that caused me to freeze up. It could have been encountering the dreaded ugly stage, or even having created something beautiful part-way through. In both cases, I was afraid to go further, either from fear of working through that messy stage, or for fear of ruining something good. For me, now, the process of painting involves risk and experimentation, and I do it with joy and without fear of the unknown. I thank Nancy for helping me get to that state.
~ Renata Kerr

Hey there, I'm Nancy
I'm an abstract artist, bestselling & award winning author of The Artist's Journey® and The Adjacent Possible® books as well as a Stanford educated psychiatrist.
I’ve been an artist and existential psychiatrist for over 20 years and I'm passionate about creativity, aliveness, and living your most meaningful life.
I've been an abstract painter for decades. Several years ago I created a television program "Creativity & Consciousness" where I interviewed artists on their creative process. I learned that artists in every genre grapple with fear and self-doubt and that the interior landscape affects everything!
I believe that abstract painting is a powerful way of getting at meaning and that art is a mirror that reflects our lives…the canvas reflects back our feelings, moods, interior states, and life.
I've guided thousands of artists in creating their deepest, most alive and meaningful work, and I would love to be your guide, too!

But before we get into that, I want to tell you a story.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to live my most creative and meaningful life. To say yes to my dreams. And yet it’s been a struggle.
And perhaps you can relate to this.
When I was 17, I was depressed and grappling with existential angst. I was bored with school, so I stayed home and read The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. In particular, The Inferno.
Dante spoke to me across seven centuries. The opening lines from The Inferno gave me hope:
“In the middle of the road of my life.
I awoke in a dark wood and the true way was wholly lost.”
~ Dante Alighieri
Dante was lost, and I was too. Soon, Something called me. It was medicine. And the day I finished all my training, something else called me the siren call of art in the form of sculpture.

I found my teacher Adrienne and told her, “I don’t know what I’m doing.” And she said, “Great.”
Soon, one thing unfolded into the next, and I was drawing figures, painting watercolors, oil still life and landscapes, collage, mixed media.
And I knew I wanted to go more and more abstract into abstract expressionist works. I loved Cy Twombly, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler. And I wanted to paint like that.
I found myself trying to replicate the works I loved, but ultimately this was a dead end. I felt bored.
There were times when it was such a struggle. I got really busy in my life and my art floundered. I wasn’t expressing the paintings I wanted to express and I felt like giving up, but something in me just couldn’t give up.
There comes a day when you face yourself and your darkest, deepest doubts, when you wrestle down the dark angels of angst and despair.
The deeper truth I discovered was that I wanted to paint like me. I wanted to explore the reaches of my own imagination.
Being an Artist is Ultimately an Inner Journey
One of the lessons I’ve learned over the years as an artist as well as working with artists in workshops and classes is that being an artist is ultimately an Inner Journey.
While we learn concepts, principles, and techniques, we find out that these are guides, but they are not the thing itself.
To get to our deepest work. It’s about stepping into the unknown.
It’s about adopting an attitude of not knowing. It’s about cultivating exploration and experimentation.
And it’s about moving closer and closer to our own self-expression.

Technique is valuable, but it’s only there as a tool to support our expression.
We don’t lead with technique.
This is a big shift artists come to sometimes after years of focusing on rules, constructs, and techniques.
The dark night of the soul is the moment when you face yourself and wrestle down your darkest, deepest doubts. You wrestle down the dark angels of despair, and you see that on the edge of that dark night is the transformation of ultimately trusting yourself.
And that’s a whole new journey.

Can you relate to this awkward moment of wanting to finally paint like you?
So finally, one day I discovered how to make that transformation in my art and that’s what I’m going to teach you.
I’m going to show you how you can learn about everything I did to create that amazing transformation that’s changed over 22,000 artists’ lives in addition to my own.

Nancy’s incredibly generous instruction is such a loving gift to us all. I have truly become a devotee. She is inspiring, amazingly insightful, nourishing, life-affirming and encourages me to be a better artist. I feel connected to her and her tribe on a whole other level … a ”Zeitgeist” level.
~ Ariane Edmundson

What Bob Reid is Saying
Click Here to Read the Transcript of the Video
Obviously you have a lot of faith in, in what Nancy’s doing for your art. And I suppose for other people’s art, can you talk to me about that?
“Sure. It’s a lot more than just art. She calls it, the art of the possible or the adjacent possible and sort of everybody’s living in a box and the artist has to live beyond the box.
So I believe we’re all an artist in our own way. And her message to me is that it’s okay to tap that creative part of yourself in a different way that wasn’t told to you or taught to you or defined to you. So this is that creative phenomena of the art of the possible. That’s very uncomfortable for most of us to be in a space where we don’t know what the answer is.
There was never once she said to anybody that was wrong, or you should have done it this way, or I’m going to tell you to do it that way. So if you’re going to create something that no one has told you what to create, then you have to have this freedom to fail Liberty, to learn, to do it wrong because there’s no definition to what right is.
So then you find what works is what works for you coming from what Nancy calls, beyond knowing, and some people call it the dark night of the soul coming from a place where there are no lights, there are no road signs. There are no recipes. There’s no specificity of what we should do. And that’s the artist’s journey is to live in that white space, that open space and create their own answer.
So art is an interesting way of looking at things. A lot of people have studied art and have never been an artist. A lot of people have studied literature and they’re not writers. So no matter whether you’re beginner to the painting creative process, or you’ve done it all your life, the ahas are just as profound because they’re personal ahas. They’re not prescriptive recipes.
Again, you read Nancy’s book, the artist’s journey. There’s not one painting in the entire book. She’s not telling you how to function at a certain level or do things a certain way. She’s allowing you to discover your artistic soul through your own techniques and own processes.
What she offers are some things to experiment with some things to try. But what you do with those elements is unique to you as the individual.
So Nancy alive, She’s an evergreen process. She’s a work in progress. I predict she’ll have a series of books, a series of workshops, a series of insights. Indeed. Her life is a journey that which she’s a spiritual questor. She’s questing for some sort of profound personal truth and helping us define our personal truth.
And therefore, I see her as a beacon of light in that journey of life.
~ Bob Reid
What should you do..?
You must learn to evolve your art.
Specifically, you must learn the science of creativity,
which is The Adjacent Possible® Framework.
If you do, it will take your art to the stratosphere of WOW, to that place of continuing evolution.
If you don’t, you may make it to the experimentation stage in your art, but you’ll miss out on the most important experience of evolving your art.
I know so many artists running around, working hard on their art, trying tools, trying techniques, trying to create art that stands out- wasting thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of precious time on tools, techniques, and strategies that don’t work.
They desperately want the excitement of creating art they love.
They want to express themselves and share their art with the world and feel proud of it.
But without mastering evolving their art- specifically The Adjacent Possible® Framework, they’ll never find what they are looking for.

YOU are an ARTIST!
You are here to express your deepest, most meaningful art.
Art that is dynamic alive and evolving.

I’ve seen many artists struggle to create art they love, art that is unique to them and get fed up and feel like giving up as artists because they didn’t know how to access The Adjacent Possible effectively.
They hit a plateau.
The creative impulse is calling them, nudging them to take the next step, to step into the unknown, but they’re scared, terrified.
And so they turn their face away. They refuse, they retreat back to the safety of the known.
And even though they sometimes put their toe in the waters of experimentation, they’re not really evolving their art and it’s tragic because it doesn’t have to be this way.

That’s why I’ve combined my decades of education at the intersection of art, psychology, creativity, science (evolutionary biology, theoretical physics) and mathematics, all my training and experience and my entire heart and soul, to bring you the most exciting, unique and comprehensive program that will simplify complicated concepts into understandable lessons that you can access with flow and ease.

Why The Masterclass Works So Well

A Comprehensive Abstract Painting Program

It is based on principles from the intersection of art, psychology, creativity, science (evolutionary biology, theoretical physics) and mathematics. .
It was created to enhance your own creativity and creative wellbeing by implementing a few simple research based methods to your own life and art.

Simplifying The Complex
I’ve figured out how to simplify such complicated fields as the study of color, as well as composition and values in a way that makes it easy for you to create your own unique art with excitement and confidence.
You’ll be able to take these concepts and create art you love and that astonishes you, art that is experimental, art that expresses you.
I’ve told you about the overarching concept of the inner journey and the three key practices that will transform your art.
There’s a great deal more to learn in order to create the art of your dreams, art that expresses your own voice and vision.

You need to understand the game changers of:
- Value and value contrast
- Compositional principles and how to compose intuitively
- The principles of simplicity and constraint, which we know from science and how this strengthens your art
- How to simplify color and work with color contrast,
- The power of maquettes or little studies
- Working in a series and creating lots of starts
and more in order to succeed. All of which we cover in this comprehensive program.

Handcrafted Modules
I’ve designed all of the well-crafted video modules.
They’re easy to follow and they’re highly entertaining and they’re super engaging and seriously effective.
All of the exercises, reflections, painting prompts and full painting demos are eye-openers for transforming your art.
They’re there for you.
And you can go through the lessons again and again, going deeper with your art
Artists have told me the material is so rich that they discover new things each time they go through the lessons

12 Modules of Art Bundles
Each Art Bundle contains the following pieces:
Studio Concept
Learn a new concept in abstract painting every week.
Studio Exploration
Investigate your inner and outer landscape as it relates to the week’s lessons.
Studio Exercise
Implement what you’re learning by completing suggested exercises. Yes, there’s homework!
Studio Demo
Watch a fresh painting demo every week where I complete a painting and give commentary and tips throughout.

What you’ll accomplish in each Art Bundle

Module 0: Studio Start, you will begin your inner journey by starting an art journal to document your journey and gathering provisions and supplies for your studio.
We’ll get started with stream-of-consciousness mark-making and the 6 Maquette™ Exercise, which is something we explore in Studio Start at the beginning.
This is a wonderful introduction to abstract expressionism and a fabulous lesson where you’ll learn how to activate the canvas™ with stream-of-consciousness mark making, and then begin the back and forth dance of addition and subtraction, adding, covering, veiling, editing, then activating again, back and forth and experience something akin to the lifecycle of birth, growth, deterioration and death that we see in nature.

Module 1: Working In A Series, you’ll learn how working in a series and learn how to take an idea and expand upon it in an iterative way. Exploring variations as you experiment deeply and discover more about yourself as you create and evolve your art.

Module 2: Simplicity & Constraint. You’ll learn one of the most important foundational concepts for artists and innovators and apply this to your art

Module 3: Working Large, Staying Loose. When you start a new painting, one of the first decisions you make is: What is the scale of the painting? What size will you make it? In particular, we’ll explore the siren call of working large and staying loose

Module 4: Color Contrast. You’ll learn how to simplify color by employing visual contrast. By applying this concept, you’ll no longer be intimidated by the enormous field and complexity of color

Module 5: Value Contrast. You’ll learn why value is a game changer and how simplifying values can transform your art.

Module 6: Intuitive Composition. We will simplify this complex subject down to a few things that make 90% of the difference in creating powerful art

Module 7: Rhythm. We’ll explore how rhythm creates a sense of aliveness in our paintings, as well as movement, structure and elapsed time. We’ll explore rhythms in nature and in our bodies and how to translate underlying rhythmic structures and sequences to the canvas

Module 8: Structure. We’ll add another foundational concept of art to our repertoire. Discover how important it is to have an underlying foundational structure in abstract painting. In particular, we’ll explore the rectilinear Cartesian grid as well as what I call the organic grid substructure.

Module 9: Shape. We’ll explore the rich world of shape, shape contrast, and shape relationships that will help you create visually exciting paintings.

Module 10: Color & Value Relationships. You’ll explore the relationship of color and value and how to create powerful paintings with this awareness. You’ll learn the Two Color-Four Value Palette™ Exercise which will be a game changer in simplifying color and value for you.

Module 11: Mark-making. You’ll create your own personal visual lexicon and vocabulary by exploring experimental mark-making

Module 12: Minimalism. You’ll come full circle back to the foundations of simplicity and constraint that threads through this entire journey. You will strip away the nonessentials, achieve simplicity and distill your art down to its essence.

+ 3 Bonus Modules

The Zorn Palette & Abstract Painting. This is a perennial favorite of the Journeyers since 2017. Many of my artists returned to this bonus module again and again.

Variations & Contrast. You’ll discover the power of endless variations and how you can employ this in your art

Combinatorics & Re-Combinatorics™. This is a favorite lesson at my live retreats. This is a concept from mathematics that teaches us that the elements of creation work together in endless combinations. We’ll explore this extensively.

AND BONUS: Special Guest Lectures:
Guest teachers who will share their perspective and experience as successful artists.

One of my art teachers from a few years ago was telling me that I could not do abstract painting. So I was eager to learn and valued this online opportunity, where I could experiment without being criticized.
The great structure of the course, the video demos, and exercises helped me to overcome the blockage. And having some written contents made it easy to find my way around. To get a material list with each module was also really helpful.
I opened up and found new ways of expressing myself.
Nancy had such a wonderful encouraging way to guide me through each month and still has that motivating and enthusiastic way to keep me inspired.
Even though I have not really published anything during the training, because I felt shy about it. I feel deep gratitude and I actually recently exhibited some of my paintings that were greatly influenced by the training I had.
Thanks for everything!

12 Live Weekly Group Calls
Where we meet up live, discuss the concept for the week & even usually paint together on the call!
Artists love these calls, especially when we create together. We have lots of fun and it's wonderful getting to know one another.
The live group calls are recorded. If you can't make the call you can send in your questions or thoughts and get all the support you need for 6 months, even after the 12 live weekly group coaching calls end (after the 12 week Intensive we have 2 calls/month).
12 Week Transformation Challenge
It’s important that you stay consistent and work through the exercises during the program, and one way we’re helping you do that is through “The 12-Week Transformation Challenge.”
During this challenge, you’ll follow the action items after each lesson designed to eliminate overwhelm and keep you taking small (yet powerful) steps forward as you express your deepest art.
No more wondering, “What do I do next?” All you have to do is complete the items on your checklist after each lesson and earn Points!

Rhonda enjoyed chatting with artists and formed friendships in the Facebook group

Nancy is a very generous teacher giving great knowledge as a psychiatrist & artist. She instills in us the belief “to trust yourself “ & step into the unknown…terra incognito.
Nancy is vivacious & interesting in her presentation of the modules in the courses, which I have enjoyed immensely.
Having completed The Artist Journey course & Studio Journey, I have been provided with invaluable information, developed a very strong studio practice & the love of exploring & experimenting.
My work has indeed gone to a new level, for which I thank Nancy & am eternally grateful.
Throughout my 4 year association with Nancy, I have made many new friends through the special Facebook groups & have enjoyed chatting with these “like minded” artists & viewing their work. I have also been fortunate to meet some in Australia in person, we have formed a lovely friendship.
Thank you, Nancy for these wonderful opportunities.

Vera took her painting to a new level

As for Nancy: I don’t know where to start my praise. I think I will start by saying that you are a marvelous person: it shows through in your teaching. You are full of life, full of love of life, and have a deep understanding of the “other.”
You are a fantastic teacher, and your lessons are so intelligently put together! I can honestly say to you that this is one of the best workshops I have taken!
You not only provided invaluable information, with which you opened doors to a new level in painting, but also you led us through with your encouragement & your belief that we can do it.
You made it possible for us to venture in new territory & helped us through it!
~ Vera V. Tchikovani

Maggy went from devouring books and courses to transforming her studio, painting, exploring, and experimenting with ease.

I fell in love with making marks and trying to express feelings and for 15 years, I devoured books, courses, videos and all possible to learn.
And so, the novice learnt to draw, learnt something about composition, some basic colour theory – and began to exhibit and was astonished when 5 years later I was encouraged to enter a national juried competition. The Gods smiled, and I was selected – not just that year, but year after year.
But, the fear of failure echoed loud and the light went out, I began to stumble around, avoiding my studio – I had lost my belief and compass.
And then, one day, when I was very close to giving up, as if by magic, a guide showed up …a guide who has quietly transformed my studio practice – and brick by brick built my self belief and courage and helped me to paint, paint AND paint and explore and experiment…
Nancy’s way of teaching provides an absolute smorgasbord of learning opportunities and a multiplicity of pathways: from core concepts and principles to guided personal reflection, exciting demonstrations, but always with encouragement for personal choice and growth. There is a richness of sharing from Nancy the polymath, of the wisdom of the grand masters, not only of art, but also of philosophers, writers, poets, mathematicians and more.
But keystone in all has been to quietly and consistently build self belief. There is magic here and I cannot thank Nancy enough for her generosity and incredible program. The program is not a painting course per se, it is a invitation to dance in the internal landscape of magical creativity.
~ Maggy Herbert-Jobson

Marian incorporated painting with her yoga practice

Nancy’s many years of study as an artist, practice as an existential psychiatrist, and exceptional understanding of the creative process come together to infuse and ignite her curriculum.
Mastery and joy combine and characterize her eloquent teaching.
And her painting demonstrations are incredibly illuminating, inviting, fun and beyond inspirational.
The Artist’s Journey Course Work and Nancy’s abiding trust and encouragement are the cornerstone of my artistic development.
Watching her simultaneously paint and teach is captivating and spellbinding, like the best improv theater ever.
I’ve travelled from nascent “yeah kind of” artist to one who races to her studio, eager to spend time painting, experimenting, exploring, allowing, and finally, liking my work.
My wall is strewn with starts, paintings, exercises and things unknown hang all over. No small task! Grateful to Nancy forever! Namaste!
~ Marian Bach

There is no risk. The only risk is not doing the work you’re here to do. I’m confident you’re going to love the program, just like the artists in our community. Why Should You Register NOW?
Artist’s Journey® Masterclass is an exclusive program. Enrollment opens for a limited time. If you don’t enroll now you won’t have another chance to enroll in the program and attend the live group coaching calls until enrollment opens again in the fall of 2023. Enroll now while you can!
Class begins January 23, 2023.
YOU HAVE A CHOICE!
You could try to do this all by yourself. You could spend thousands of dollars and years of study trying to piece it all together, which is essentially what I’ve done here.
Or you could attend art school and invest $44,000 for one year,
Or you could join me and my team of guides as we walk you through step by step, a curated course of study that has delivered phenomenal results for artists across the world since 2017 and can help YOU do it faster, easier, and with more confidence.
Wouldn’t you like to have that in your art and life?
So by having this expert guidance, I can give you the help you need to circumvent big challenges, wasted time, and all the frustrations and complications that you will encounter if you try to do it alone.
I want you to achieve the experience of feeling confident as an artist, trusting yourself in your process and creating the art of your dreams, art that excites and wows you.

I have some questions for you …
-> Are these things you want in your life?
-> Are you interested in getting there faster?
-> Are you committed to doing what it takes to get them?
-> Are you excited to start creating with confidence?
-> And do you believe it’s possible to trust yourself in your art
If your answer is Yes, then it is with great pleasure that I invite you to join me in the Artist’s Journey Masterclass.

Nancy, you are an amazing woman and your sharing of art and the normal challenges of creation, lights the path for others. It often seems like the times I am in the worst cycle of self criticism are the times I receive one of your inspiring emails with messages guiding the way back to light. Learning to accept the struggle as an indication of growth.
Now I have another of your quotes to keep: “A dead woman produces no books”. I think I will post a note to myself: “What amazing paintings are lost if you die before you create them”

Frequently Asked Questions
When exactly does the program start?
The program starts on January 23rd, 2023. We will begin together as a cohort, going through the 12 modules of Art Bundles and the 12 weekly live group coaching calls with me.
If I join now, what should I do until the program starts? What happens after I enroll?
Once you enroll, you’ll have immediate access to our introductory module “Preparing for the Journey”. This is where we’ll welcome you and go through what you need to prepare for your journey. You’ll also get access to Bonus Guest Lectures.
When are the Live Group Calls?
The 12 live group calls are on Tuesdays at 10 am Pacific, starting January through April. The first group call will be on Tuesday, January 24th, 2023. You can see the time of the call in your time zone here.
I can't join the group calls live, is there a recording? Or can I send in my questions?
The live group calls will be recorded and if you’re unable to join any of the calls, you can send in your questions or thoughts before the call and watch the recording afterwards.
Do students get real time feedback in the masterclass?
I don’t offer art critiques. I believe in creating from the inside out- going inward and trusting yourself in what you want to express in your art- learning to trust your decisions as well as taking risks and experimenting deeply.
Art is subjective. It is not a cookbook formula nor is art merely technique. Through the program, you go on your inner journey to decide what you want in your art based on foundational concepts and principles shared in the program.
We explore rhetorical self-assessment of your art and see if the art works for you. We share considerations, insights, ideas, possibilities to think about, as well as what we know from foundational principles that creates visually exciting, strong art- like visual contrast and underling structure, for example, but in the end, it’s your art and your decisions that matter.
Do we learn techniques in the program?
Yes, you’ll learn technique but technique is a tool, a means to an end. It is not the thing itself. Just as math is not merely numbers nor is music simply notes. We focus on foundational concepts and principles you can apply and then extrapolate from to explore in your art.
Are the lessons pre-recorded ?
The lessons for every module are a combination of recorded videos, text and exercises. And there is a weekly live group call with Nancy to discuss the content from the module.
How is the program duration structured with the 12 week intensive?
The program is for 6 months. The first 12 weeks are the intensive where we go through the modules and have weekly group calls with Nancy. Afterwards, we’ll shift to group calls every other week for the remainder of the 6 months to continually evolve.
How long do I have access to the program?
The Masterclass is a 12 week Intensive with 6 months access to the group coaching calls. After 6 months, you can be a part of the Artist’s Journey® Academy for a nominal fee. If you don’t enroll in the Academy you’ll be able to keep your access in the masterclass lessons but won’t be able to join the live coaching calls or workshops after the 6 months are completed.
I'm not sure I have enough time. How much time should I dedicate to this program?
We recommend that you set one hour aside for the weekly live coaching calls. There are 12 of them. In addition, it would be best to set aside at least an hour weekly (2 to 3 would be best) to go through the course content and do the exercises. That is for the first 12 week intensive. Then you can dedicate less time to go through the additional material for the rest of the year.
Are there any specific tools or supplies required?
No. There are no specific tools or supplies required. You can work with your own supplies. If you don’t have any, we have a list of suggested materials.
I don't have a studio, can this program work for me?
Having a studio or not. Having a small or large studio doesn’t matter. If you have the basic material you need to start experimenting then you’re all set.
Is the Masterclass only for abstract artists?
No, it’s not only for abstract artists. Many representational artists have been in the program. Though we explore abstract expression, the foundational principles and concepts we explore can be extrapolated and explored in representational art.
Who is this program good for?
This program is for artists and creatives yearning to create from the inside out. You desire to express “you” in your art and understand that this is a journey of saying yes to your dreams, facing the perils of creating and learning to trust yourself in your process.
This program is about accessing the deep well of your creativity as you continually explore, experiment and evolve your art
This is not for you if you’re looking for a formula or recipe. Each of us is different, and in this program, you’ll learn how to express yourself, allowing your own unique lexicon and signature to come through on the canvas — not emulate others!
What makes this program different from all other courses?
The thing that makes Artist’s Journey® Masterclass unique is that it is a comprehensive, 6 month program, based on the intersection of art, psychology, creativity, science and mathematics. These are the underpinnings of The Adjacent Possible® Framework and the ISEE™ Methodology- creativity methods based in science and extrapolated for artists that are unlike any other.
It’s an interactive program with live components including 12 live group calls with me. We will meet on weekly group calls so I can take you through the key lessons of the week, adding commentary, further thoughts and considerations. I’ll help you with anything that YOU might be struggling with.
This is unlike any of my other online courses. The live interactive component can help you express your deepest art in just a few months.
It’s different, because I don’t offer a recipe or formula for you to follow. I don’t give you critiques or “painting by committee” type answers because I feel that this approach leads to predictable art- art that ends up being unsatisfying and unsustainable.
Instead, I join you on the journey you’re already on and guide you to believing in yourself, so you can deeply experiment, evolve your art and experience true self-expression. It’s like the difference between giving you a fish versus teaching you how to fish.
Because of my training as a psychiatrist, I’m deeply familiar with the psychology of what holds people back from being their true selves. My focus is on the inner landscape, the inner journey, and the mindset of trusting yourself so you can deeply experiment in your art.
Most workshops and classes don’t address your mindset and if they do, it’s mentioned briefly. There is no ongoing support and encouragement to work through inner doubts, fears, and blocks.
What is included in the Artist's Journey® Masterclass?
So much! 12 weekly art bundles plus 3 bonus art bundles. Each Art Bundle consisting of 4 main parts: an art concept, inner and outer explorations, exercises and a painting demo exploring the concept we’re featuring that week. You’ll receive encouraging and inspiring emails to guide you through the workshop each week.
In addition, there will be 12 live group coaching calls with me to explore the concepts more and help you with anything you might need. Also, there will be a 12-week transformation challenge to keep you on track with everything you need to complete each week.
What else in included in the Artist's Journey® Masterclass?
You’ll get ongoing guidance throughout your year 6 month journey in the Masterclass. In addition to amazing bonuses.
Are the workshops downloadable?
Workshops must be viewed online and are not downloadable. Occasionally a resource will be made available for download such as a PDF.
What if I have support issues?

If you’re not happy for any reason at all, please email my team within 14 days of joining, and we’ll issue you a prompt and courteous refund. No questions asked! There are no refunds after 14 days.

What if I’m still on the fence?

A Personal Note to You:
I know that the thought has probably gone through your mind that this looks great, but I don’t have the money to invest in this right now. And maybe you’re thinking, Oh I’ll invest, next time this offer comes around.
But think about it this way. Where will you be a year from now?
You’ve probably been working on your art for months, even years, because we’ve already identified that this is important to you. How much progress have you made on your art during that period of time?
And here’s my question for you. What’s going to be different in your life a year from now?
My guess is it may not be that different. And in the meantime, during that period of time a year from now, you’ll have kept doing things you’ve been doing for the last year without solving the problem. And so your problem is still going to be there.
But let’s consider the alternative.
Imagine that you invest today in Artist’s Journey® Masterclass. Where will you then be a year from now?
Picture yourself, having everything this course offers during this year. Can you see what changes you will have made in your life and art during that time?
- You will have completed many starts.
- You would have worked in a series.
- You would be exploring scale.
- You would be using The Adjacent Possible® Framework to evolve your art.
- You would learn about intuitive composing and get more comfortable and confident with your art.
- You would learn to bring in concepts from the intersection of math, science, psychology, and creativity, to cut through and simplify it down, distill it down and learn these deep foundational concepts that are game changers for your art.
- You’ll be painting and creating with more ease and confidence and joy and excitement than you’ve seen in years.
And these are just a few of the kinds of experiences you’re going to have.
Ask yourself this question: Will my life be better a year from now if I invest today or not?
To me, the answer is yes!
I have a vision for you to believe in yourself as an artist, and to create and to experiment and explore and access the adjacent possible framework and evolve your art and to love and be excited by your art.
And I invite you to join me in that vision. I invite you to invest in creating your artistic future.
A future of trusting and believing in yourself as an artist and expressing your own unique art, your deepest, most meaningful and alive art with confidence and ease.
Something is calling- you your future self, your future art, the possibilities, The Adjacent Possible of where you can go with your art is calling you.
Will you say yes?
Will you refuse the refusal?
Say yes quickly.
Say yes to creating with confidence, to opening up unlimited creative channels, to evolving your art, to experiencing a feeling of aliveness, to expressing your legacy, to do what you came here to do in your life and art.
Express YOU in your art.
Thank you,
Nancy

you know, like letting go, like she’s helped so much and letting go of control and letting it flow and happen organically more. Okay. Before. I mean, I, I come from a place of figurative art already. So I think before I was pretty stuck in figuring it, and now I feel like integrating and going forward quick, more abstraction just in general and trying to incorporate that into my work and even kind of doing an offshoot of abstraction and yeah,
she helped me just get back into our, I haven’t done art in years, so it, you know, my sister Kanye ended doing this and like, I’m so glad that she did because it opened a door that was shut for a really long time for me. And, you know, it’s good to, you know, get over not doing it and just do it,
you know, like stop being so scared and get on with it and see where it takes you and enjoy the journey. But I mean, it’s sort of a new approach. I’ve never done an app. I was an art major in college. I never did abstract art. So this is all new to me. And, you know, I love the fact that,
you know, you sort of let go of any kind of form or anything in, it was all like fluid motion and not thinking, you know, and, and just S unselfconscious, which what I needed, you know, especially getting back into it that helped, you know, free me. Yeah. It’s, it’s like there are no mistakes, right.
And so it’s very freeing to do something where, you know what, it doesn’t matter. Even if I mess up, it’s not really a messed up, I can work with it. Isn’t that along the lines of, but this is helping you, Julie, tell me a little bit about that. Oh yeah. I take that. I think it was really interesting because at the beginning of the week,
we started started with no constraints and then she sort of gave us more as the week contend exercises, where there were more constraints and that was really helpful. I think it just, you know, to go to that point of chaos and pull back and feel much more free within boundaries at the end of the day, I think it was great. You got a bunch of different perspectives and everybody’s really friendly.
And in general, sort of, I feel like artists in general are pretty friendly people. And I think the group really gel very well together and, you know, everybody contributed something and Nancy made sure that everybody’s contribution helped each person’s journey. So it wasn’t just like, you know, it w every time someone shared everybody was kind of getting something from being together and being creative,
sort of fed off of each other and gave you new ideas to like, Ooh, I like that effect, you know, I’m going to try that, like, which was me. Yeah.

What Kersteen Anderson is Saying

I have to say that this has been the most freeing experience I’ve had in art probably ever. And I went to art school. Just to reconnect with my creative process and reconnect with what moves me to create and opening my mind and my heart and my soul to making. This course did that. So I am grateful.
So I’ve been painting in other media and other kinds of painting for many, many years. And that kind of discipline in itself was very constraining. I’ve been making art and making things for other people for many years, but not for me. So this was a way to open channels and really start to think about and visualize and feel the kind of art that I want to make for me.
Because for me, I need the power of a group. For me, it is really important. There’s a collaborative effort. And then there’s just an energy of the group and a bonding that happens that made it more possible for me to access that part of myself. Alone, I would fall back into my old sort of thinking.
And also there’s a lot of validation. I know Nancy talks about intrinsic validation and how important that is and I was able to access that a lot more in the class as well.
Also having the group around and just seeing that there are more people like me, and that I’m not alone out there struggling to make art or to find my voice, but there’s a lot of other people doing the same thing.
And that is a very grounding and gratifying experience.
I noticed most how different everyone is and the different ways of expression. When I worked by myself, which I have for so long, I don’t get to see that. And so I get a little mired in just what I do and my expression.
So it was very fresh to see other people’s voice. And as Nancy calls it, our signature, the signature of others, and it solidified in me my signature, which is empowering. Which is like, this is my Mark. This is my signature. And that is yours. And that is yours. And there was something very empowering in that.
It solidifies this is what I tend to do, but also this is who I am. This is who I am and not like anyone else.
So that kind of dispels the whole inner thinking of like, well, why should I? it’s been done. You know, or that person’s better or whatever we go through in our minds it dispels all of that, at least it did for me.
To say, well, this is my Mark. No one can make this Mark, but me and no one can interpret what I see, but me. So therefore it hasn’t been done before. So therefore that is validating. So that was an example of intrinsic validation, just looking around at other people and what they were doing.

it’s something that has always brought me a lot of joy. And so to be able to, you know, work with somebody who is allowing us to access that part of ourselves to express that is, that is why this whole trip has been worth it prior to coming to this course. I didn’t really feel like I had a signature. I didn’t really identify as an artist in any way,
shape or form. It’s just something that I knew that I loved. And I think one of the other, one of the other reasons for coming to this course was around not, I didn’t want to be afraid to be seen. And, and, and, and, and we learned about, like, we, we learn a whole bunch of different techniques to sort of free up our heart making.
And so those, you know, working within the construct of those little maquettes of those squares, you know, very much allows a different kind of freedom than if you’re just, you know, staring at us large blank piece of paper. It’s a really excellent exercise for loosening up. Yeah. So it’s art and colors, and it’s always been something I’ve been drawn to.
It was something that I focused on a lot in high school, but then I was never really able to allow myself to fully dedicate myself to art. And it dropped completely by the wayside all through university. And, you know, I’ve been practicing as a nurse for the last, almost eight years now. And I just got back into it this last February.
And so I’ve just been practicing at home very small within the confines of the sketchbook. So it was, you know, this is solidified that art needs to be a priority in my life because it helps me understand who I am and, you know, the various challenges that I may face yeah. In life. And yeah, it’s something I just, I it’s,
I need to keep doing it. Okay. Thank you.

you know, I like to volunteer myself with that experience. Nancy’s, she’s such a gentle soul, so generous soul and so much acceptance of others that I really feel that she helped us with our problems. You know, I believe that you learn as your experience. And my experience of her was completely no judgment.
She’s very gentle, you know, and like experiencing that from her, I was able to do it for myself. She encouraged us to just take her risk and just to experiment and not to judge. And she encouraged us to open to the unknown and try different things. And by her encouraging us all us and not really judging our process, I really felt more at ease.
You know, I actually got a sense from her that everything was okay. It was all good. There was no bad or good old. And because she felt that way. We all feel that when you see the infection, you know, we all got infected of this beautiful feeling of we were okay after all, you know, well, I am kind of like a beginning painter.
It will benefit a lot from a person was beginning because then you start opening up and actually transmitting your emotions that you’re praying GBT into a canvas. But as we go, the artists and artists for many, many, many years, and all of a sudden you feel stuck, and this is, this will be something that you can read, new files of creativity.
And for the experience painted, that will be something that they could utilize as well to renew their vows, to people, committed, to experience less church work. And to kind of like start from scratch. You know, life is too small beginnings. And just because you were an experience or it is doesn’t mean that you cannot benefit for some there’s benefits for the beginning for the beginner,
painter or artists is good to start opening up creativity trans late that productivity to the canvas, trying different things, not being afraid of experiencing different things. And for the person who’s been painting for a while, like I said, you get stopped. You get into old habits, you get to judgment of your work. And so this will be like a renewal renewing your vows and creativity,
knowing your bowels with yourself accepting. And definitely anybody could, especially in the Hispanic community. And I also will have to start like a new space in my home. I kind of like relate related to start take my, all my art class set and start building this studio for me, probably we’ll do that little corner of my bathroom. One of my brothers to do a little studio for me,
where I could just go there and experiment. She would say, let it all flow as a painter and using music. I think I would love to do them more often. Well, I think anybody could benefit from this retreat, even if you are not an artist as a person, because life is life is like art. And when you take the sweet treat,
you can incorporate all that, that you learn into your life. You don’t have to open up to express yourself to see wonder every day to take risk, to incorporate your feelings into daily basis daily life. Right. I don’t know where he is just like his art and participant.

The Studio Journey was great! And will be for me forever great!
As a teacher myself of traditional oils and abstract concepts, I was pleased to find Nancy on Pinterest and decided to enroll to learn more techniques so I can bring them to my own work and to my students.
I had no idea that I would be so grateful for what I discovered from Nancy. Not only is she a great articulator, her amazing continuous knowledge of how the human psyche works and how our creativity is derived from a subconscious level is tremendously effective. Her research is stunning and her delivery is spot on. The circle of creativity she brings to me continues to infinity with her inspiration which I can redeliver to others.

I LOVE both of the Journeys very much!!!
And I am very happy and inspired to do my work more structured than ever before. I always say to my family “my Nancy” because she became a part of my artistic life. I learn so much (also English language!) and I love the high level of her thoughts, also her exchange with her loving partner.

The painter and art critic, Roger Fry, once asked a little girl how she set about drawing. She replied,” First I have a little “think” and then I put a line around it.” that is the great beauty in children’s art. They are serious about what they do, and they paint with an innocent eye, not what they see but what they know. Their emotions become the binder in the paint as they tell their stories.
In her program, Nancy is exceptional at encouraging her students to think and explore endless possibilities while at the same time urging them to look inside and tell their stories with freedom and the pure joy of creating.

I am about 75% through the course and it is all coming together for me. Nancy’s way of explaining and doing her demos have been extremely helpful. Being able to go back and forth with the lessons has been a great advantage for me.
Nancy has been very generous with what she has shared. Many workshop teachers aren’t as giving as she has been.
The course has been wonderful, am very happy I am taking it, and love The Artist’s Journey book she wrote as well.

Your course has made such a difference in my abstract painting. I can’t tell you how glad I am to have found your courses! Thank you! A teacher had mentioned you in class so I googled you and signed up for your email updates. When I was able to, I signed up for both of your classes. You have made such an impact on my life. You have helped me be better at something I am passionate about. For that, I can’t thank you enough!

I adored the studio journey with my whole heart. It was the best experience of my own journey so far. I tear up when I think about what that course did for me. And how I love Nancy for bringing it into our world.
It caused me to have the courage to create my own online course. Her book is my bible and I advertise it as such in my course. Nancy is a generous soul who understands the inner struggle artists face. I will never forget her.

I am very pleased with the Studio Journey course. It is challenging yet supportive and provides a wonderful approach to doing intuitive work. Nancy Hillis is extremely generous with information. She is a prolific and exceptional writer and her Studio Journey is enhanced by all she shares.
~ Kay Hunt
The modules are full of thought-provoking information and well-thought-out exercises that have really helped me structure and organize my studio practice.
The biggest boon for me, though, is Nancy’s encouragement to trust yourself…the first time I have felt permission to approach abstract painting from my more intuitive, spontaneous self.
Thank you, Nancy.
